Marion County short-term rental rules
As of October 2026, neither the City of Ocala Code of Ordinances nor the Marion County Code contains a separate vacation rental permit or registration chapter, so the state framework applies: a DBPR vacation rental license for homes rented more than three times a year for stays under 30 days (§§509.013, 509.241) and state sales tax registration. The Marion County Tax Collector says the county has no agreement with any booking platform, so owners collect and remit the 4% tourist tax themselves. HOA and condo documents can still restrict rentals.

Does Airbnb collect Marion County's tourist tax?
No. The Marion County Tax Collector states that the county is not contracted with any third party, including Airbnb, VRBO and HomeAway, so the property owner must collect and remit the 4% tourist development tax. The tax also applies to cleaning, pet and other fees included in the rent.
What is the total tax on an Ocala vacation rental?
Stays of six months or less carry 11.5%: Florida's 6% sales tax (§212.03), Marion County's 1.5% discretionary sales surtax (DR-15DSS, 2026) and the county's 4% tourist development tax (DR-15TDT).
When does the Ocala horse show season run?
World Equestrian Center hosts events through the year. The HITS Ocala Winter Circuit at HITS Post Time Farm runs from October 22, 2026 to April 18, 2027, with USEF-rated competition there from December through March.
